Meet the Maker
Corliss Lawler
Well now, I’ve always had a love for making things. My creativity was mainly poured into cooking and sometimes a bit of sewing, but I didn’t really think much about art until I was 68 years old. That’s when my granddaughter, who’s quite the artist herself, gave me a little nudge and encouraged me to express myself with drawing and painting. I’ll tell you, it was quite the struggle at first, trying to learn to draw my white dogs. But with a little help from my friend Katie, who taught me how to draw my dogs over the Internet, I began to see progress.
Now, painting wasn’t something I’d ever thought I’d do, and truth be told, I’d been discouraged every time I tried before. My work just never seemed to look realistic enough for my liking. But, through an art group I joined, I discovered that things didn’t have to be realistic at all. In fact, I learned all about surrealism, and I started enjoying painting in ways I never had before. But as luck would have it, I developed dry eye syndrome, which made painting harder and less fun as time went on.
Around that time, I decided to try my hand at floral designs. I was mighty proud of the first batch I did, though my attempt at selling them didn’t go quite as planned. That didn’t stop me, though! I got to thinking, and it wasn’t long before I learned from my partner that you can learn just about anything on YouTube. So, I dove right in and began teaching myself how to create really beautiful floral designs. Now, I’ve never been one to color within the lines, so I didn’t just stick to flowers. I got to branching out and experimenting with all sorts of things.
A while back, I realized that if I was going to keep making wreaths, I needed to make my own add-ons because those little doodads you buy at the craft stores can get mighty expensive. A few months ago, I even decided to try my hand at ‘fake bakes.’ I started using spray foam from the hardware store to make little decorations, and then I found out about air foam clay. Oh, Lord, I’ve had such fun with it, creating all kinds of little critters and creatures straight from my imagination.
I did try to sell some of my work on Facebook, but I tell you, I got so many scammers that I just about gave up. But, as they say, when one door closes, another opens. So here I am, with my very own website to share my creations with the world. Tadaahhhh!!! I hope y’all enjoy what I’ve made and maybe even take a little piece of my creativity home with you.
